"Io sono nato libero" (I was born free) is an Italian-French-Hungarian war drama film released in 1993. The film centers around the life of a young boy named Ion, who was born inside a sperm whale's belly and was raised by his mother in the ocean. As he grows up, Ion learns to swim, hunt and communicate with other sea creatures. When Ion is finally rescued by humans, he is taken to a scientific institute for study. There, he meets two young girls, Giulia and Jennifer, who become his friends. However, Ion struggles to adapt to life on land and longs to return to the ocean. As World War II looms, Ion must navigate the dangers of human conflict and try to find a way to protect his ocean kin. The film explores themes of war, freedom, and the relationship between humans and nature.
